Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is looking to League Two as he looks to prepare his side's push for promotion in the second half of the season, with Mansfield midfielder CJ Hamilton a target, according to Football Insider.

Smith had Hamilton watched in a match against Crawley and are keen to make a move having been impressed with what they saw, but do face competition from West Brom and Preston who are also interested in the 23-year-old.

So would Hamilton be a good signing for Villa?

We discuss.....

Louie Chandler

"It is not a particularly exciting one.

"The forward has done reasonably well in League Two but not well enough to indicate that he can cut it in the Championship.

"At 23, he should be approaching the peak of his powers, so if they can get him on the cheap then do, if not, don't."

Gary Hutchinson

“No.

“It’s just not a good idea. Mansfield wanted something like £1m for him. They’re living in dreamland.

“Just because they pay silly money for their players doesn’t mean everyone else has to.

“Hamilton has done relatively well in League Two, but look how Eisa and Doidge struggled when stepping up."

“Steer clear.”

Jay Taylor

“He would be a solid squad player, but I can’t see him being more than that at present.

“The Mansfield man has had a pretty impressive season for the League Two side this term and looks ready to make the step up to the Championship.

“Dean Smith tends to find a gem, and CJ Hamilton could well be the latest in a long line of shrewd signings.

“He might not hit the ground running, but I see this eventually turning out be a pretty impressive deal.”
