Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is looking to add to his ranks before the transfer window slams shut in a week, with a move for versatile Wigan Athletic attacking midfielder Josh Windass being considered, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The Robins will not have things their own way though with both Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest reported to be interested in the 26-year-old, who has been a bright spark in what has been a disappointing season so far for the Latics.

So would Windass be a good addition at Ashton Gate, is he needed and would he make the starting XI?

We discuss.........

"He would be a good signing.

"Windass is a technically gifted player so should suit the style of play that Lee Johnson encourages and his versatility makes him a great option for any manager at this level.

"He could fill in various attacking positions and may flourish playing off a big target man like Famara Diedhiou.

"You would have concerns if he was the Robins' only signing this month because he doesn't score enough goals but he would still be a smart addition.

"However, it's important that he isn't the only one through the door if Bristol City are serious about winning promotion."

"Windass would certainly add something to Bristol City's side, although it is hard to see where he would fit into Lee Johnson's starting eleven at present, particularly as the current starting XI are performing so well.

"He would in theory offer Johnson the chance to start with a number ten that could operate between the lines and in the space behind the likes of Famara Diedhiou and Andreas Weimann.

"He can also operate wide on the left or right, and this will definitely put him in good stead if he were to complete a move to Ashton Gate, with Johnson having shown a willingness to deploy players in abstract roles this term.

"It will certainly be interesting to see if the attacking midfielder does indeed leave Wigan in this window, with the Latics sure to be demanding a healthy fee as part of any potential move."

Luke Phelps

“There won’t be a striker in the Championship that hasn’t been linked with Bristol City by the end of this transfer window. Josh Windass is the next name touted with a move to Ashton Gate, and this one is probably the most realistic yet.

“Windass, 26, has been a saving grace for Wigan this season. He’s had his struggles with injuries, but in 15 Championship games he’s managed to score four goals - it’s not a huge tally, but to be able to score that many in a team that really doesn’t score many is enough to go on.

“He’d have a much better impact if he was playing in a team like Bristol City, with players like Niclas Eliasson and Josh Brownhill behind him. Bristol City have needed a striker since game week one, and Windass would provide sufficient back-up and competition to the likes of Andreas Weimann and Famara Diedhiou.

“He may not be in the starting line-up every week but Windass would surely get his fair share of game time. Able to play up-front or on either wing, or even behind the striker, a player as versatile as Windass will be utilised wherever he goes.”
