With Steve Bruce leaving to join Newcastle United, there's still a lot of uncertainty at Sheffield Wednesday, but the team have made a fantastic start to the new season under caretaker boss Lee Bullen.

The Owls are currently top of the Championship table on goal difference, after back-to-back wins from their opening two league matches against Reading and Barnsley.

However, one player who has not been involved in their opening two games is striker Sam Winnall.

The 28-year-old has struggled to make an impact for the Owls since his move to Hillsborough from Barnsley over two years ago.

The centre-forward arrived at Sheffield Wednesday with high expectations, having scored eleven goals in 22 Championship appearances for Barnsley so far that season.

He struggled to make an impact after his move to Hillsborough though and went on to score just three goals in 15 appearances for the Owls, as they lost to Huddersfield Town in the play-offs.

After a promising start to the 2017/18 season - where he scored on the opening day against Queens Park Rangers - Winnall was sent out on loan to Derby County.

Despite more than half of his appearances for the Rams coming from the bench, the striker was still able to make an impact at Pride Park and scored six goals before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Brentford in February.

After successful surgery, Winnall eventually made his return to action for the Owls in 1-1 draw at Derby in December and went on to make seven appearances last season, although all but one of them came from the bench.

The way things are at the moment, it's difficult to see Winnall getting much of a chance for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship this season.

He's currently behind the likes of Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes in the pecking order at Hillsborough and it's difficult to see that changing any time soon.

However, the striker has shown over the past few years that he's capable of scoring goals in the Championship and he could still have what it takes to get his career at Sheffield Wednesday career back on track.

Sheffield Wednesday have the chance to give him that opportunity, by sending him out on loan to a League One club before the end of the month.

It's somewhat surprising that Winnall couldn't secure a move to a Championship club during the main transfer window, as he's proved himself to be a good player at this level over the past few seasons.

However, he's got an very respectable goal record in League One and there are plenty of teams in the third tier who could do with a striker of his quality.

After struggling for game time over the past couple of seasons, Winnall should relish the chance to be main man again - even if it means dropping down to the third tier - and it could be the perfect opportunity for him to get his career back on track at Hillsborough.
