Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has given his verdict on Lyle Taylor's situation after his most recent contract offer was withdrawn after the club's self-imposed deadline passed.

The news broke on Tuesday morning, via Richard Cawley of London News Online, with new owners East Street Investments confirming that they will now be listening to offers for the marksman this month.

But for Smith, it is a situation that is difficult to accept.

"It's hugely frustrating that despite what appears a lucrative offer from us he has rejected it and feels he needs to move on," the regular punter told Football League World.

QUIZ: Can you remember Charlton’s last 15 January deals?

"I think the club and Bowyer have helped him kick his career onto another level but the reality is he's 30 this year, heading into last six months of his contract and then when you consider he's played the large majority of his career in the lower levels of English and Scottish football you can't begrudge him a decent final pay day.

"We signed him on a free 18 months ago after running down his contract so we can't be too shocked if he goes out a similar way."

During his time with the club, Taylor has become an Addicks icon, netting 32 times in 58 games and of course helping them return to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season.

However his time in the second-tier has been a frutrating period so far, missing a huge chunk of the season with a knee injury, only recently returning to the field in a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough after missing 12 second-tier games.
