After spending what felt like an eternity in the fourth tier, Portsmouth haven't exactly excelled on their return to League One.

Optimism was high on the South Coast following promotion, despite boss Paul Cook leaving for Wigan. Kenny Jackett joined and the club were sold to former Disney Chief Executive Michael Eisner as fans began to dream of back-to-back promotions.

However, an opening day victory was followed by two draws and two defeats, leaving Pompey sitting 16th. Of course, it's too early in the season to dampen any expectations, but it has shown that Jackett needs time to get things right.

He boasts an impressive CV at this level after guiding Millwall and Wolves to the Championship, which should encourage fans in the long-term.

Yet, there's a lot of work to do in the meantime. Jackett hasn't settled on a formation, switching between a back three and back four in the defeat to Rotherham last time out, which was the Millers first away win since April 2016.

Even though they rallied in the second half and created chances, the poor first half performance saw Jackett make two changes at half-time, highlighting his anger.

Although, one positive was the performance of new signing Matthew Kennedy, who entered at the break. The Scottish winger was one of three debutants who joined the club on deadline day, arriving from Cardiff City.

Kennedy was a menace to the Rotherham defence with his direct style and trickery from the left and was probably the game's best player in the second half. The 22-year old has joined for the season and could be the man that transforms Portsmouth's attack.

Either way, having chopped and changed across the five games so far, fans will hope that Jackett will find the right formula very soon, as the club look to continue their progression.
