Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has strengthened his squad ahead of the start of the new League One season, with the signing of Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal, as confirmed on the Pompey club website.

The 27-year-old has scored 61 goals in 134 league games since joining Rovers from Millwall in June 2016 and could feature for Pompey in Saturday's League One season opener against Shrewsbury Town.

So can Marquis provide the goals to fire Pompey to a top-two finish?

We discuss........

George Harbey

“Big things will be expected of Marquis after scoring so many goals for Doncaster over the last few years, but I think it’s an outstanding signing.

“He has been on fire for Doncaster over the last couple of seasons, and now he’s moving to a club he knows where after playing there on loan not too long ago.

“He is proven in League One, and you feel that in a team that create a load of chances like Pompey, he will score even more this time around.”

“He doesn’t really offer anything different to what Pompey already have in their attacking armory, so you would expect one of either Oli Hawkins or Brett Pitman to move on this summer."

Ned Holmes

“Yes, I think so. Portsmouth fell just short of the automatic promotion places and adding this sort of quality should help them take the next step this season.

“Marquis was lethal in League One last season, scoring 26 goals, and led Doncaster close to play-off qualification.

“Portsmouth look set to lose Jamal Lowe and the arrival of the 27-year-old should go someway to replacing that firepower.

“Jackett’s side were only three points off the top-two last season and I think a prolific striker like Marquis who is at the top of his game could be exactly what they need to push them over the line.”

George Dagless

"This is a great signing.

"I think Portsmouth have firmly become favourites for the title now with this arrival and it's going to be tough to stop them.

"Marquis was one of the best attackers in the league last year and helped fire Doncaster into the play-offs.

"With the players Portsmouth can put around him this year, there's no reason why he can't fire them towards the top step this campaign.

"I feel for Doncaster, though, who now need to try and find a way to replace such a pivotal figure in their squad."
