With manager Marcelo Bielsa now in post for a further 12 months, the work can start at Leeds United to prepare a squad capable of making a strong challenge for an automatic promotion from the Championship next season.
One player bound to feature high in Bielsa’s plans is centre-back Liam Cooper, who is expected to agree a new contract at Elland Road this summer, as reported in the YEP.
So how big a boost will it be for the Whites if Cooper signs a new deal?
“It’s essential business.
“Cooper has cemented himself at the heart of the Leeds United defence, and his leadership qualities have proved pivotal for Bielsa’s side.
“It’s important Leeds keep an element of consistency from last season, and getting this agreement over the line would be a good start.”
“I think so.
“Cooper did not have the best time of it in the play-offs but over the course of the season I would say he was comfortably their best defender.
“Considering their lack of depth in that area I think it would have been a big blow to lose him.”
“Of course, he’s been excellent.
“He might have made a mistake in the play-off second leg but he had his best season overall last year.
“He’ll be looking to build on that without doubt.”
“It’s excellent news for Leeds.
“He was one of their best performers last year and it’s vital they carry over some consistency in their starting line up into the next season if they want to hit the ground running.
“Hopefully Roofe will follows suit and then Leeds fans can begin to feel excited about the year ahead.”
