‘It’s beyond strange’ – Journalist provides update on current Charlton Athletic situation

Alan Nixon has provided fans with a brief update of the current happenings at Charlton Athletic.

Almost six months ago to the day, Charlton began a new chapter in the club’s history. Fans had finally seen the end of Roland Duchatelet and the start of East Street Investments’ era at the club – but nobody could’ve foreseen what would happen.

The short of it is that the club was promised large sums of money by ESI which they’ve not yet seen, resulting in a toxic boardroom which has since broken up, and now the club looks as though it will have yet another owner before the end of the season.

This month has seen the likes of ex-Bolton Wanderers and Watford chairman Laurence Bassini emerge and subsequently fall out of contention to purchase the club, whilst ex-Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins seems a popular move amongst fans.

Also yesterday, club director Marian Mihail answered several of fans’ questions, including questions on the ongoing sale of the club, and those missing Range Rovers of Matt Southall’s.

The club has been dealt a cruel blow with what’s happening. After the contested reign of Duchatelet, Charlton fans were excited for what seemed like a brand new start, with genuinely passionate people looking to take Charlton into the Premier League.

But all that hope and optimism has since perished.

The verdict

The days of Duchatelet seem like a blessing after everything that’s gone on. The situation has taken so many turns and has drawn in so many new names and faces that it’s hard to keep track of.

Simply put though, it seems as fans’ worst fears will eventually come true that, both Southall and Tahnoon Nimer had no good intentions, and finally that the club will soon (hopefully) have a new and trusted owner in place.
