Aston Villa have recalled defender Tommy Elphick from his loan spell at Hull City.

The former AFC Bournemouth star was sent out on loan to the KCOM Stadium after featuring just three times for Villa under Steve Bruce this season, before the latter’s sacking in October.

But the 31-year old was outstanding during his time at the Tigers, and his spirited performances at the back helped Hull fly up the Sky Bet Championship table, away from the drop-zone.

There’s no doubt that Dean Smith will be hoping that Elphick can help shore up a leaky Villa defence that has conceded 35 goals in the league this season. Right-back James Bree has had to feature at centre-half in recent weeks due to Axel Tuanzebe’s absence, so they need reinforcing in that area.
