Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has snapped up former AFC Wimbledon captain Deji Oshilaja on a free transfer, as confirmed on the Addicks' club website, after the 26-year-old left the Dons at the end of last season after making 67 league appearances in two seasons.

Bowyer told the club website: "He's another very good player. He's a leader and he was captain of his club last year so it's becoming a trend," adding: "He's a powerful boy and he can play all across the back. He's versatile and that's something we need."

So will Oshilaja prove a good addition at The Valley?

We discuss........

George Brooks

"This could be a good signing for Charlton.

"Oshilaja is a solid defender, but he's also comfortable with the ball, so he should suit Charlton's style. He's a commanding presence and a real leader on the pitch.

"He's got plenty of experience in League One and I think he's good enough to make the step up to the Championship.

"He will provide Charlton with some more strength in depth at the back and will increase competition for places within the squad. He can also play anywhere across the back four, so his versatility makes him a very useful option for Lee Bowyer to have.

"It's a free transfer too, so it won't cost Charlton too much if things don't work out for the defender at The Valley."

George Dagless

"It's an interesting one.

"He was at AFC Wimbledon last year but obviously had his contract come to an end but Lee Bowyer obviously likes what he has seen.

"He's been on trial and has clearly impressed so you cannot suggest that the Charlton boss is taking a big gamble.

"Obviously, the player needs to prove himself in a competitive environment - particularly at this level - but I think it could prove potentially to be shrewd.

"Bowyer has done more than enough to be trusted with such signings to be honest."

Gary Hutchinson

“This is a really interesting deal, one that I have to admit could go either way. He’s a competent defender at League One level and much depends on how well he steps up.

“I fear a little for Charlton this season. Some of their signings have seemed a little naïve and ‘bargain basement’. I hoped to see them really kick on but this is another example of fishing around for proven talent in the lower divisions.

“Chuks Aneke and Macaulay Bonne are two more that they’ve moved for who have looked good at one level but not done anything in the Championship.

“It sunk Ipswich last season; I hope it doesn’t do the same to the Addicks.”
