Sheffield Wednesday could be set for an interesting summer ahead, with Garry Monk looking to build his squad ahead of next year's league campaign.

One player who hasn't yet discussed his future with the club is Fernando Forestieri, with the forward being out-of-contract at the end of June.

Forestieri wasn't named in the matchday squad for Sheffield Wednesday in their first match back in action after off-the-field events had brought an abrupt halt to fixtures across the country.

The Owls drew 1-1 with promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough on Saturday, which was good news for punters who took advantage of Ladbrokes new customers offers and backed the BTTS market, and Wednesday will be hoping they can finish this year's campaign strongly under the management of Monk.

But does Forestieri have a long-term future with Sheffield Wednesday after being left out of the squad against Forest due to 'fitness issues'?

We discuss....

Alfie Burns:

It was probably the end of the road for Forestieri before that decision was made on the squad at the weekend.

Did I think he might be included in the squad? Yes, but his long-term future isn’t with Wednesday.

Forestieri has served his best years at Hillsborough and his decline has been one developing over the last couple of seasons.

When the 2020/21 season starts, you’ve got to expect him to be playing his football elsewhere and I imagine that this weekend, which was another kick in the teeth, only confirms that

George Harbey:

I think it's almost inevitable now, isn't it?

Forestieri just doesn't seem to be in Garry Monk's plans whatsoever, and he has decided which players he wants to work and which player he doesn't want to work with since the first day he arrived at Hillsborough.

Forestieri is undoubtedly a talented player who has been so important for the Owls in previous seasons, but he is quite a livewire and you never know what you're going to get from him.

With nothing really to play for between now and the end of the season, you would have thought that Saturday's clash with Forest may have been a chance for Forestieri to prove his worth to Monk, but that wasn't to be the case.

Connor Wickham getting on the scoresheet only increases competition for places even more, so I think it's very likely that Forestieri will be on his way out this summer.

George Dagless:

I think so.

It always seemed likely that he'd be going this summer and I think that this latest development pretty much confirms that.

He's not been at the level he was at a few years ago and though he's still a talented player, it seems as though the relationship between him and the club is now coming to a natural end.

If the Owls can get him off their books in terms of wages, too, that'll probably help them out and so I think things are coming to a close here for him.

I'm sure other clubs will be taking a look at him though.
