New Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk will be hoping to make it back to back wins when his side entertain Fulham at Hillsborough this weekend, following a 2-0 win away at Huddersfield Town in his first match in charge.

Monk is still getting to grips with his new squad but he has already made one clear decision, with the manager set to use 25-year-old Adam Reach as a wide man, where he believes he is most effective.

Monk told the Star, "I have already spoken with Adam. He will primarily be a wide player for us and it is where he is most effective," adding: "The main aim is for Adam to be a wide player. That is where I think his biggest strength is."

So is Monk right to want to utilise Reach out wide?

Josh Cole

“Although Reach has not performed badly this season in the heart of Wednesday’s midfield, it could be a shrewd move by Monk to use him as a winger over the coming months.

“A fantastic crosser of the ball, the 26-year-old could provide the likes of Steven Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu with the service that they need to thrive in the Championship.

“Whilst the excellent form displayed by Kadeem Harris in recent weeks should see him keep his place on the left-hand side of midfield, Reach will be confident of challenging Josh Murphy for the right-wing slot.

“Whilst Murphy has illustrated some signs of promise since joining the club from Newcastle United, his lack of consistency may result in Reach overtaking him in the pecking order at Hillsborough.”

"It could be a bit of a risk.

"It does seem as though Reach is more effective in a central role, so Wednesday may be better off keeping him in that role.

"Indeed, if Monk does move Reach out wide, it means that someone on the wings is either going to have to become a more focused on the central positions, or drop out of the side completely, and that could weaken them in that sense as well.

"Even so, I do think having Reach available to fill in that role on occasions when they may he is needed to do so is also a valuable asset for the Owls to have at their disposal."

“It's a wise choice.

“With the ball at his feet, Reach is arguably one of the most talented players in the Championship, and he is such an important player for Wednesday.

“In Monk’s preferred 4-3-3 system though, Reach can’t attack as much, so playing him out wide would allow him to get on the ball more and not worry too much about defensive duties.

“They have plenty of depth in central midfield, so they can afford to make this tactical change.

“He was influential for the Owls last season, but he needs to get amongst the goals and assists this season.”
