Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has got his squad back from their summer break, with pre-season already under way at Thorp Arch, as the Argentine looks to take the next step and secure automatic promotion from the Championship next season.

Amongst the many selection decisions that Bielsa will need to take, it seems he has made one with regards to striker Mallik Wilks, who spent last season on-loan at Doncaster Rovers, with his intention of giving the youngster a chance to stake a claim for a first-team place in pre-season, as reported on Football Insider.

The 20-year-old scored 14 goals and made eight assists in 48 appearances for Rovers last season, having previously spent spells at Accrington Stanley and Grimsby Town.

He does have a cloud over him at the moment, though, with a postponement of a court appearance for a stabbing charge revealed earlier this summer.

So is Bielsa right to give Wilks his chance?

We discuss........

George Dagless

"Yes.

"He had a good season last year at Doncaster Rovers and deserves a shot at the Championship this time around.

"Whether that is at Leeds remains to be seen but he certainly is worth a go in pre-season to see what he has got.

"Leeds need new wide-men this window, but why not use one they've already got on the books if he is good enough?

"The Whites have nothing to lose."

Ned Holmes

"I think it’s right that he is given the opportunity to prove himself in pre-season. Bielsa and Leeds have been reportedly chasing wingers all summer and with the exit of Jack Clarke eminent, there is an opportunity for the 20-year-old.

"There is no reason why Wilks shouldn’t be eyeing up the sort of contribution that Clarke provided Leeds with last season.

"He had a sensational season at Doncaster Rovers in 2018/19, scoring 16 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances for the League One side.

"The winger may not be ready to play in a title-challenging Championship side week in week out but he should be given the chance in pre-season to prove to Bielsa he can be useful."

Jacob Potter

"It's a smart move by Bielsa, which could pay off.

"It’s no secret that Leeds struggled for cutting edge in front of goal last season, and ultimately, I think that cost them promotion to the Premier League.

"Bielsa is short of options in attack, and Wilks has definitely given him a welcome selection dilemma heading into pre-season.

"He netted 14 goals for Doncaster last season, and I think he has a point to prove for Leeds.

"His good run of form evidently hasn’t gone unnoticed, and I think he’s a player that could put some serious pressure on the likes of Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford for a starting spot in the Leeds team.

"If he isn’t featuring for Leeds this season, then I fear that he could be heading for a permanent exit from Elland Road at the end of next season."
