Tuesday night saw Nottingham Forest book their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the Reds defeating Fleetwood Town by a goal to nil at the City Ground.

The night presented manager Sabri Lamouchi with a perfect opportunity to reshuffle his rather large squad - the Reds making nine changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Leeds at the weekend, with four new signings making their debut in a Garibaldi shirt.

But there were still some players who are extremely low down in the pecking order that failed to get a look-in on Tuesday, and subsequently, Forest fans will be hoping to see these players depart the City Ground before the end of the month.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey discusses the current situation on Trentside, with so many players under contract at the City Ground...

What's the situation at the City Ground?

"After bringing in 12 new players over the course of the summer, Forest now have 40 senior players on their books.

"John Bostock, Yuri Ribeiro, Brice Samba and Carl Jenkinson all made their debuts for Forest on Tuesday, and yet there still wasn't chances for the likes of Claudio Yacob and Yohan Benalouane to even get on the bench.

"Forest's squad is one of the biggest in the division by a long way, and there has surely got to be more departures between now and the end of the summer.

Did they get rid of many players in the summer?

"Forest did say goodbye to a lot of fringe players over the course of the summer, with Jorge Grant, Apostolos Vellios, Hillal Soudani and Karim Ansarifard all departing the East Midlands side.

"But the likes of Zach Clough, Jason Cummings and Gboly Ariyibi are all still under contract at the City Ground, and must be desperate for moves away - the latter is yet to make a single appearance for the Reds since joining from Chesterfield in 2017.

"Of course it isn't Forest's fault if clubs don't want to come in and take these players off their books, but there needs to be some effort in clearing them out, as it's a much bigger issue than people think."

Are there any players close to leaving?

"Adlene Guedioura looks likely to be the next player to depart the City Ground.

"The Algerian midfielder is said to be undergoing a medical in Qatar ahead of a proposed move to Al Gharafa, with his second spell at the City Ground set to come to an end.

"The 33-year-old made 28 appearances in all competitions last season, but due to the obscene amount of depth in Forest's midfield, he is well at the bottom of the pecking order."

Who should also be on their way out?

"You could name a handful of players that Forest should definitely look to get rid of this summer.

"Bringing in two goalkeepers over the summer was surprising to say the least, and it looks as if Costel Pantilimon won't get a look-in ahead of new signings Aro Muric and Brice Samba this season, so he should be urging Forest to sell him.

"Michael Hefele is another player who should be looking to leave, with the likes of Cheme, Joe Worrall, Michael Dawson and Tobias Figueiredo all above him in the pecking order.

"It's actually quite hard to comprehend how many players they have to choose from."

Do they still need to strengthen in areas of the pitch?

"Bizarrely, you feel that Forest could definitely do with another face up top.

"They bid farewell to Soudani, Ansarifard and Vellios in the summer, with Tyler Walker also joining Lincoln City on loan, and they brought in Rafa Mir on loan from Wolves.

"But Mir has failed to make an impact thus far, and Lewis Grabban looked far too isolated against Leeds at the weekend despite scoring.

"In my view, they need a forward who can hold the ball up."

Finally, how important is it that they trim their squad?

"It's so important - they have far, far too many players on their books and it can't be the best from a financial point of view.

"As touched upon before, it's a much bigger issue than people think - you just can't keep every player happy, and who knows what that might do in terms of squad morale and cohesion."
