Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke could be out for two months after suffering  medial knee ligament damage on Saturday away at Burton Albion, as confirmed by manager Jack Ross on the club website.

The 25-year-old was only making his fourth appearance for the club after injuring the same knee shortly before arriving at the club from Bradford City in the summer, and is expected to be missing for six to eight weeks.

But how big a blow is the loss of Wyke for Sunderland?

We discuss.....

Alfie Burns

It’s a mammoth blow.

This next month or so will define the promotion race in League One, so for Sunderland to be entering that period without Wyke is bad news.

Of course, Ross has other options, but Wyke was supposed to be their main man.

Jay Taylor

Not a huge blow.

Sunderland were doing well without him with Josh Maja notching consistently.

It is a blow as the partnership between Charlie Wyke and Maja was just starting to lay a foundation ahead of the rest of the season.

Eight weeks out is a long time but you’d imagine the Black Cats have enough to pick up their form without him.

George Dagless

Fairly big but not fatal.

Wyke was missing at the start of the season but the club got by.

He is someone you'd rather have fit but, at the same time, other players can step up.

Gary Hutchinson

Huge. Massive.

He was their star signing, the one big-money buy that they rolled the dice on.

Sinclair hasn’t settled yet and Maja is talented, but needs support.

Maybe Chris Maguire can do the job whilst Wyke is out, but he flopped for Bury last season.

This isn’t what jack Ross wanted at all.
