Gaetano Berardi is having no luck with injuries this season having limped off during his comeback from a four-month lay-off last night.

The 30-year-old Swiss defender had been out with a knee injury since October and had since looked to step up his return to first-team action in Monday night’s Premier League Cup group game with Southampton.

But his return lasted all of 44 minutes before being replaced and taking his anger out on the dugout when walking off down the tunnel.

It’s yet more frustrating news for Leeds and Berardi heading into the business end of the season.

Berardi will have scans this afternoon, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post to determine the extent of the hamstring niggle.

And having made just eight appearances this term, and looking impressive before injury hit, we asked our team of FLW writers their thoughts on how big a blow Berardi’s latest injury trouble is for Leeds United.

Here’s what they had to say.

Chris Gallagher

“A very big blow.

“Okay, Berardi might not be in the team when everyone is fit, but his versatility is crucial.

“He can play across the back four and is a leader, so this setback is frustrating for both him and Bielsa.”

George Harbey

“It’s yet another injury that they could really have done without.

“Leeds have looked shaky in defence this season, and they have looked short in their options at right-back.

“Berardi’s return would have provided real squad depth ahead of a crucial couple of weeks, but it’s now a very untimely blow for Bielsa.”

Jacob Potter

“It's a hugely frustrating blow.

“He could have played a crucial role in helping aid Leeds' promotion bid this season, and Bielsa will be praying his latest setback isn't too serious.

“If he is ruled out for the foreseeable future, then Leeds need to act fast in signing a defender to give them additional depth.”
