Brentford manager Thomas Frank has secured the services of Swedish defender Pontus Jansson from Leeds United for a fee of £4m up front, plus add-ons which are likely to rise to £5.5m, according to Sky Sports News journalist Lyall Thomas on Twitter.

Jansson played a big part in the Whites' promotion challenge last season, where they narrowly missed out following a play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County, but an alleged breakdown in his relationship with Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa seemingly led to a hasty exit from Elland Road.

So will the Bees purchase of Jansson for only £4million up-front, prove to be the bargain of the summer in the transfer market?

We discuss........

Gary Hutchinson

“No.

“Sorry, Leeds fans, it’s just not. The cult of Pontus Jansson is actually much stronger than the contribution of Pontus Jansson. His personality, that committed, no-nonsense defender with Leeds at heart, that’s made him a hero.

“On the field he’s a decent centre back, but not one of the best in the Championship in my opinion. I’m surprised they’ve let him go, but I think £4m is about fair. He’s not the very best that the Championship has to offer, that’s for sure.

“He is a good age which might raise a few eyebrows – 28 could be seen as the height of his career. I’m not saying it’s a bad deal, but there are better players making moves that might be seen as a bigger bargain.”

George Dagless

"It's a cracking deal for the money.

"I do agree that there is a risk with this move given the circumstances that appear to have caused his Leeds departure but, come on, for that price it makes sense to roll the dice if you're a club like Brentford.

"The Bees have seen the likes of Chris Mepham and John Egan leave in recent times and yet, once again, they appear to have a defence that, on paper, looks very handy indeed and with cash to spare.

"It remains to be seen how he goes about himself at Griffin Park next season but on the face of things this is a good deal for the Bees for sure.

"He's definitely worth more than £4m but it's testament to the fact that Leeds were so desperate to get rid of him that he's gone for that fee.

"A bargain, yes, but Bees fans will hope that they do not see the reasoning behind that fact this season."

George Brooks

"There are still a few weeks to go until the end of the transfer window, but this could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer.

"Jansson is a top defender and he was one of Leeds' most consistent performers in the Championship last season.

"He could turn out to be a magnificent signing for Brentford, and to get a player of his quality and experience for around £5.5million in today's market has got to be considered great business.

"The defender had three years remaining on his contract at Elland Road, so I'm surprised that Leeds didn't hold out for a bigger fee for him because £4million up front is an absolute steal.

"I think it's a major blow for Leeds to lose Jansson and they could find it very difficult to find a good replacement for him this summer."
