SPFL side St Mirren were stunned in the week when goalkeeper Craig Samson retired and left the club to join League One side Sunderland, and join up again with manager Jack Ross as his goalkeeping coach.

Samson, 34, had made 13 appearances for St Mirren so far this season in the SPL but takes up the goalkeeping coach role at the Black Cats, following the departure of Jimmy Walke, who has left to link up with Paul Lambert at Ipswich Town.

Our team give their thoughts on this controversial move...

The first thing that comes to mind is that he is better off retired as it’s highly likely he is getting more money at Sunderland.

I’d imagine the only reason for him hanging up his gloves to move to the League One side, having played in every St Mirren game this season.

That shows the state of Scottish football, if true that a player would rather retire and coach than play as it is more financially rewarding.

Gary Hutchinson

If it is exactly what it’s been sold as, a keeper retiring, then I’ve no issue.

If he subsequently comes out of retirement and plays for Sunderland, it’s a sly move.

I’m hoping it’s not underhand and he is just moving on to the next stage of his career.

George Harbey

I’m not sure about this.

It’s a bizarre move, but Ross obviously knows what he’s doing after his time in Scotland - he isn’t one to make mistakes.
