Dean Smith faces his first big decision as Aston Villa manager as he decides whether or not to offer experienced defender James Collins a permanent contract with the club.

The former West Ham man has been training with the club whilst he recovers from an injury suffered whilst on trial but has now returned to full fitness.

Collins has previously played for Villa before, making over 100 appearances for the club between 2009 and 2012, before being sold to the Hammers.

There is a huge lack of defensive personnel at Aston Villa at the moment with James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe the only senior centre-backs at the club.

Central midfielder Mile Jedinak has been filling in alongside Chester frequently this season with the results being less than convincing.

So, should Smith offer the experienced centre-back a permanent contract with the club?

Without a doubt.

The experienced centre-back is a major upgrade on what Villa have and would help solve their defensive problems.

Collins could have a similar influence to that of John Terry last season, so it should be a no-brainer for Smith.

It'd do Dean Smith no harm.

James Collins coming in would be an experienced addition that will help the transition from Brentford to Villa Park.

A short-term deal until January would be the ideal length to get him through to the winter window and look at other options.

It is a low-risk signing that would aid Villa's defensive issues they currently have.

Collins would be a solid addition for Smith's side.

The only issue is his age, as if he was to play for Villa then he would most likely be replacing Axel Tuanzebe in the team which would affect the youngster's development.

His experience would certainly come in handy in a Villa side that has been under-performing this season.
