Wigan Athletic are looking into potentially doing a deal with free agent Steven Caulker with the centre-back currently training with Paul Cook's men.

Landing the 26-year-old would be something of a coup for the Latics with the one-time England international having rediscovered his form north of the border with Dundee.

Yet, Caulker decided to leave the SPL side by triggering a clause in his deal and it means he is available on a free.

And, that got us at FLW wondering whether he would be a smart signing for Leeds. Whilst the Whites have defended well on the whole under Marcelo Bielsa, they don't have much depth.

Gaetano Berardi has performed very well this season in an unnatural centre-back role, with Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson the current pairing at the back.

Youngster would be able to step up and Bielsa would certainly find a way around any injury crisis, but would they be better to just sign Caulker?

We take a look...

Alfie Burns

Not for me.

Leeds’ squad is thin, but that’s Bielsa’s choice and I can’t see him changing his stance.

In terms of centre-back options, Leeds do have enough available, so it’d be foolish to chase Caulker.

Louie Chandler

Probably yes.

It would not be a great loss if they were to miss out, but they could certainly do with some more cover at the back.

There are not many more appealing clubs to be at right now so it is a deal they could definitely get done.

Chris Gallagher

Without a doubt.

Caulker is only 26-years-old and could still develop into the top centre-back that many people hoped he would be.

Just look at how Bielsa has improved the current Leeds players, he could work wonders with someone that has the talent of Caulker. Plus, an additional centre-back might be needed over the course of the season.
