‘It’d be a massive coup’ – Stoke City plotting move for 22-year-old: Opinion

Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City are reportedly interested in signing Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke, according to Football Insider.

The 22-year old has emerged as one of the best young defenders in League One, and has been a mainstay for the League One table-toppers this season, featuring 36 times in all competitions for Kenny Jackett’s men.

Stoke boss Nathan Jones will be familiar with the Pompey defender, with his Luton side facing some tough encounters with Pompey over the last few years, and the Welshman is now reportedly plotting a move to land the centre-half, who has made over 150 appearances for the Blues.

Here, we discuss whether Clarke is a good signing for Stoke…

George Harbey

“I’d say a move to the Championship has been on the cards for a long time now.

“I’ve watched Clarke play in the flesh, and he practically wins everything in the air, he’s not too short of pace, and has a big future ahead of him.

“If Stoke land him, it’d be a massive coup.”

Gary Hutchinson

“Finally, someone pays attention to me!

“I’ve been calling Clarke out as the best centre back in League One by a mile.

“He’s got it all and will be a top player one day – this wouldn’t just be good business, it would be incredible for Stoke.”

Jacob Potter

“It’s an excellent bit of business if they can pull this off.

“Clarke has age on his side, and could certainly cut it at Championship level.

“He could be a long-term replacement for Ryan Shawcross and is exactly the type of signing that Stoke need to be making this month.”
