Sheffield Wednesday are casting their eyes over free agent Ben Purrington, as per a Twitter update from journalist Ian Baker.

The Tweet claims that the Owls will have to battle it out with League One newcomers Exeter City and Scottish outfit Ross County, following his departure from Charlton Athletic.

Playing in a variety of different roles for the Addicks last season, Purrington featured 31 times in all competitions for the London club, chipping in with four goals and three assists.

Regarding Sheffield Wednesday's interest in the former Charlton defender, Carlton Palmer shared his thoughts to FLW:

"It'd be a good addition, I'm surprised that Charlton are letting him go.

"But he's at the right age. Again, he's 26, he's experienced, he's been involved in three promotions. He can play as a left-back, left centre-back, left-wing-back.

And, he's naturally left-footed, which is something that Sheffield Wednesday struggled with last year."

The verdict

As Palmer says, a natural left-footed defender who comes with versatility could make for an excellent addition at Hillsborough this summer.

Marvin Johnson, who has proven to be most effective on the left flank in the final third, had to cover as a centre-back on too many occasions last time out, with the potential addition of Purrington something that could change that immediately.

Possessing the ability to operate in the Championship too, he certainly ticks a lot of boxes for Darren Moore and Sheffield Wednesday.

If this situation is allowed to play out longer, then it would be no surprise to see more clubs joining the race for the versatile left-sided player.
