Aston Villa's failure to win promotion to the Premier League this season is looking more and more costly by the day.

Just days after their play-off final defeat to Fulham, the extent of the borrowing that had been going throughout the season in order to pay for players' wages was revealed.

It showed that Villa must pay back £75million by the end of the year.

This was worsened yesterday when The Mirror revealed that the club have to raise £9 million by the end of the month, which is expect to be raised through mortgaging club land.

They are also expected to have to sell off a fair few of their star men this summer to relieve the pressure on their wage bill.

But after this latest bombshell, do our writers still fear the worst for Villa?

We discuss...

Of course, the club can’t even afford loan signings let alone permanent transfers.

Villa are finding it difficult to offload some of their higher earners and are hard balling over transfer fees.

It will get to the point where Villa will need to lighten their stance on player valuations and just get funds in the door to pay off their bills.

If is £9million this month, what is it going to be next month, and the month after that when the transfer window is closed and the only money coming in is gate receipts and commercial revenue?

If they don’t act soon, you could see them struggling to compete in the division, or even worst - going under.

Gary Hutchinson

Yes, it wouldn't surprise me to see them in League One next season, it is that bad.

Tony Xia gambled all on red, but it came up black. Now the consequences are looming large, with the likes of Portsmouth and Coventry examples of how wrong things can go.

The bad news just seems to keep coming for Aston Villa. I think they will rush into the sale of Jack Grealish - which obviously is not ideal but will help them out financially. They just need to start flogging their most saleable assets to ease the current financial situation.

Louie Chandler

If the powers that be at the club finally start thinking sensibly then they will be fine.

Even without their star men, I still think they have enough to stay in the division.

It is undoubtedly better to have one dreadful season and still have a club than lose your club going for glory again. But they must start selling.
