Nottingham Forest could make a January move for Laurence Shankland, according to Sarah Clapson of Nottingham Live.

Chris Hughton's side have endured a tough start to the new season and find themselves in 20th position in the Championship with just three wins from 11 games.

Scoring goals has been a key issue for Forest who have netted just nine times in the league this term - and that's why they could look to revisit an old target in January.

Dundee United frontman Lawrence Shankland has previously been linked with a move to the City Ground, and according to Clapson it's a move that may well resurface in the coming weeks.

Writing in a Q&A for Nottingham Live, Clapson said: "If (Lewis) Grabban ends up going, think he'll need to look at getting a striker in.

"Otherwise back to where Forest were last season - i.e. not having many options up front.

"Shankland has been on the radar for a while, so wouldn't be surprised if that link resurfaces."

Clapson then compared the pursuit to that of Scott McKenna, saying that it boils down to whether the striker will be able to hit the ground running in the Championship.

She said: "A lot of it comes down to holding your nerve and who blinks first.

"Twelve months ago, Forest would have had to pay out a lot more to get McKenna. Situation changes and then all of a sudden they get a great deal.

"Only question over Shankland would be whether he'd be able to make the step into the Championship.

"It has worked out well for McKenna, but not always the case."
The Verdict This could be a very shred move for Nottingham Forest. Lawrence Shankland is a natural goal scorer and after scoring 28 goals last term for Dundee United it's easy to see why he's being tipped for a big move. It remains to be seen whether Nottingham Forest will make a move, but it could prove to be a masterstroke.
