Football League World’s Charlton Athletic fan pundit Kieran Keogh has responded to the latest reports which are linking Lee Bowyer with the vacant Cardiff City job, following Neil Warnock’s departure from the Welsh club yesterday evening.
Bowyer has performed miracles at Charlton, with the 42-year-old manager having guided the Addicks from being a mid-table League One side to one of the Championship’s surprise packages this season, with the south Londoners currently sitting just outside the play-off places.
Given the job that the former Leeds United man has done on a shoestring budget at Charlton, it is perhaps unsurprising that various clubs have taken an interest in securing his services.
Will Bowyer leave Charlton this season?
We caught up with Keogh earlier today to ask him for his thoughts on the rumours and here is what our Charlton fan pundit had to say:
“I just think that whenever someone gets sacked or leaves their managerial post Lee Bowyer is always one of the first names to get linked with that particular job, it’s happened with Stoke, Huddersfield and now Cardiff.
“I feel like Bowyer is a manager who is a hot prospect because of the work he has done on a minimal budget at Charlton and any club at this level would be stupid not to look at him.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen, Lee wants to stay at Charlton and many comments suggest that he would like to stay at The Valley for the foreseeable future.”
The Charlton fan then gave his thoughts on how big a blow it would be for the club to lose their manager, with Keogh saying:
“It would be catastrophic if he left for Cardiff, I honestly don’t know how we would be able to stay up without him or have the players working as hard as they currently do.
“With a bit of money behind him, who knows what he could do in the future.
“But in short, Charlton need Bowyer.”
Lee Bowyer is clearly held in high regard by the Charlton faithful and any form of departure for the 42-year-old could spell bad news for the club’s play-off credentials, however it would be strange for Bowyer to leave everything he has built at Charlton behind, for a job that is in a much more pressurised environment at Cardiff.
