Sunderland maintained their challenge in League One with seven points from 12 over the Christmas period, that leaves them seven points behind leaders Portsmouth but with two games in hand moving into 2019.

Black Cats manager Jack Ross could well be looking to strengthen up his squad during the January transfer window, with the aim of gaining promotion back to the English second tier at the first time of asking.

A player who could be worth a look is Nottingham Forest midfielder Liam Bridcutt, who is struggling for game time under Aitor Karanka at the City Ground and previously played for the Black Cats from 2014 to 2016.

So should Sunderland look to re-sign Bridcutt in January?

We discuss.....

Louie Chandler

It would be an unreal addition.

Bridcutt is easily Championship quality and I would be amazed if no other side in the second-tier made a move for him first.

I would have doubts whether Sunderland would pay his wages as well.

George Dagless

They can have a go.

I personally think Bridcutt is good enough for the Championship but if Sunderland is the only side to offer an escape why not go for it?

They could be back in the second tier in six months so it might be worth a punt.

Gary Hutchinson

If they could, yes.

He’d rival Lee Cattermole and Max Power for the midfield slot, which is why they won’t sign him.

They can’t afford to spend big on a player who might not get in.

With George Honeyman and Dylan McGeough able to play the holding role too, there’s no room for Bridcutt in the squad.

Alfie Burns

The way Bridcutt’s career has declined is surprising and stepping down into League One could be good for him.

Of course, it’d be superb for Sunderland too.

Bridcutt’s experience in midfield could be vital this season and beyond.
