A summer of strengthening looks like it will lie ahead for Sunderland before the business of winning promotion to the Championship is undertaken.

The Black Cats narrowly missed out last season, losing 2-1 to Charlton in the play-off final, and will be determined to ensure that it is their final campaign in the third tier.

Another piece of transfer news emerged recently as well.

After being released by Middlesbrough, experienced winger Stewart Downing is reportedly a target for Jack Ross this summer as he looks to bolster his side, according to the Gazette.

So, would this be a good signing?

We discuss...

George Harbey

"I think that this would be a very good signing for Sunderland.

"They already have several characters in their squad in Grant Leadbitter and Lee Cattermole, and Downing would be another experienced, quality player to have in the squad.

"He’d be a tremendous player to have in League One, and it would be a real coup."

Jacob Potter

"He'd be the perfect McGeady replacement.

"Downing has a considerable amount of experience, and would be more than capable of playing to a high enough standard for Jack Ross' side.

"His creativity out wide is of real quality, and he should be top of Sunderland's wish list this summer."

Louie Chandler

"I really struggle to get excited by this.

"There is no doubt that Downing would be useful in League One, but it really makes you wonder what the plan is at Sunderland.

"They need to be careful that building a sustainable side and club does not give way to a sheer desperation to win promotion back to the Championship."
