Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is considering the possibility of recalling Sam Surridge from his loan spell at Swansea due to a striker shortage at the Vitality Stadium.

Surridge impressed during his second league start of the season during Swansea's 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Friday night, but there is now a chance the frontman's loan spell could be cut short by his parent club in January.

Howe made the surprise admission during his press conference on Monday afternoon where he claimed that Surridge's return to south coast is indeed an option, with the Cherries currently facing a striker shortage following Josh King's recent injury.

"Yeah, I think that’s an option [recalling Surridge]. We’re keen to get Josh back, but I back the players we’ve got," he told BBC reporter Jordan Clark.

In our latest FLW Six Pointer, we take a closer look at Surridge's situation following this development...

Firstly, why would Bournemouth recall Surridge?

"Howe would have allowed Surridge to join Swansea over the summer in order for him to get more regular game time at a high level, but he may be forced to reverse his decision as a result of the recent injury developments at Bournemouth.

"King is now expected to miss the next couple of weeks with a hamstring injury, with this meaning Howe was forced to name 18-year-old Christian Saydee as the only striker on the bench for his side's weekend clash with Tottenham.

"It appears that another striker injury at Bournemouth would be detrimental to Swansea's hopes of keeping Surridge beyond January."

Has Surridge been impressing since his move to Swansea?

"He has definitely proven why he is held in such high regard on the south coast, and it would be a big loss if Swansea were to lose him.

"Surridge has not yet managed to nail down a regular starting spot in Steve Cooper's side, but he has regularly impressed following his introductions from the bench, and this saw him earn his second league start of the season last Friday.

"The 21-year-old has so far netted five goals in his 18 appearances for the Swans, and it should be noted that two of these efforts came at crucial moments during the league successes over QPR and Wigan."

Do you think Steve Cooper is thinking about making Surridge the club's main striker?

"This could well be the case in the near future given that nobody else is staking a serious claim to the striker spot at the moment.

"Borja Baston appears to have lost his regular place in the side after his early-season form quickly dried up, while Andre Ayew has reverted to his wing role more recently after previously playing a string of matches in attack.

"This all means that Surridge could become the prime candidate to lead Swansea's line on a regular basis, but he must now ensure he successfully follows up his Fulham performance with another solid showing on the weekend."

Would Surridge welcome Bournemouth's decision to recall him?

"Surridge will have been occasionally frustrated with his lack of starting opportunities this season, but it appears he is now on the brink of establishing himself in the Swansea side after a strong showing against the Cottagers.

"This means the 21-year-old will surely want to now kick on at Swansea after laying the foundations for himself in the first half of the season, which means this latest development has not come at a good time for him.

"The positive side of a potential recall would be that Surridge could then push for Premier League action, but he would likely only be used as a back-up option to the likes of King and Callum Wilson."

Is he ready to perform in the Premier League?

"The fact Cooper has not deemed him ready to play regularly from the start in the Swansea side suggests it might be too soon for him to make the leap to the Premier League, but there can be no denying Surridge has shown he possesses plenty of promise.

"Surridge would probably be a more effective back-up option than the vastly inexperienced Saydee, but I think he would be much better off fighting for his place in the Swansea starting line-up in the second half of the season.

"The 21-year-old might then be in a position to compete for a place in the Bournemouth side next term, but he would definitely benefit more from a full season of Championship football prior to this."

Finally, where do you think Surridge will end up in the second half of the season?

"I can see Surridge remaining at Swansea beyond January providing Bournemouth's striker situation does not get any worse.

"Howe will be keen for Surridge to remain at Swansea to keep building his regular first-team experience, and it appears the Bournemouth boss would only recall the 21-year-old as a last resort, in order to boost his side's depth.

"The striker now looks well-placed to break into the Swansea starting line-up as they look to re-discover their form, and he could improve his abilities vastly with a run in the first team in the second half of the season."
