Football League World's Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson has raised some early concerns about the North East club's January transfer window, suggesting they may struggle to attract new players.

Boro have really struggled at the start of the season and find themselves down into the relegation zone.

Jonathan Woodgate took over in the summer and indicated he wanted to bring attacking football back to the Riverside but so far his side have struggled in the final third.

Boro have scored the joint-least goals in the Championship (13) and are on course to finish the season with 13 fewer goals than they managed under Tony Pulis in the 2018/19 campaign (49).

Star striker Britt Assombalonga has scored six times in the league this season, while the club have recently recalled 20-year-old forward Tyrone O'Neill from his loan at National League North side Darlington to provide an extra option.

Wrightson suggested it was clear that the club needed more firepower in January but indicated his concern over attracting players.

He said: "Britt’s double (against QPR) at the weekend gives us hope that he is back in form but O’Neill’s recall demonstrates how much we are in need of bolstering our attack in January.

"It will be hard to attract many players given our financial and league position but its both of these positions that are going to suffer even more if we don’t do something."

Due to the international break, Boro have 12 days until their next match, which sees them welcome Hull City to the Riverside.

A win in that game could see them move out of the relegation zone, should results elsewhere go their way.
