Jose Gomes will be keen to strengthen his Reading side this summer after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

Everton goalkeepr Joao Virginia is the only new arrival at the Madejski so far but the Royals are reportedly trying to bring in another Premier League loanee.

According to journalist Courtney Friday, the club are interested in taking Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu on loan for the season after Frank Lampard confirmed his absence from the Blues' pre-season camp in Japan.

Last season saw the Wales international make just five first-team appearances under Maurizio Sarri but made the matchday squad nine more times in all competitions.

So, would this be a good signing for Reading?

We discuss...

Toby Wilding

“I can see this being a good signing for Reading.

“You don't get signed up for Chelsea and then capped eight times by the Welsh senior side by the age of 18 if you don't have a huge amount of potential and ability, so you feel Ampadu would be more than capable of competing in the Championship for the Royals.

“That Ampadu can play in both midfield and defence could further increase his importance to Reading next season should he move to the Madejski. Bringing in someone with that versatility means they would have a number of positions covered should injuries and suspensions take effect at any point throughout the season, as they often do.

“With chances at Chelsea seemingly limited for now, you imagine Ampadu himself would be open to a move to Reading, giving him the chance to play regular football, and prove to Lampard and co. that he is ready for a regular place in the Chelsea side when he returns to Stamford Bridge in 12 months time.”

Ned Holmes

"Yes, this would be an excellent addition for Reading if they can get it done.

"Ampadu is a talented young player who could offer an option in both central defence and defensive midfield.

"The 18-year-old is a highly regarded player, as evidenced by his eight international appearances for Wales, and would be an asset to the Reading squad.

"He has never played more than six games in a season for the Chelsea senior side, so regular run in first-team football could see him flourish.

"There are reportedly a lot of clubs interested in Ampadu, so if the Royals are able to make the signing it will be a real coup."

Louie Chandler

"I think this would be an excellent signing and Ampadu would arrive with a point to prove.

"With Chelsea unable to make any new signings this summer, I am a bit surprised that Lampard does not want to hang onto the 18-year-old for next season - especially considering how often he was around the first-team last season.

"And I imagine Ampadu feels the same. But he has already proven himself to be a consumate professional and will use this decision to spurr him on even more.

"Reading could do with reinforcements both in defence and in midfield. Considering Ampadu is capable of playing both with apparent ease, this looks to be a smart move."
