Leeds United were dealt a transfer blow as it was confirmed that top target, Ibai Gomez has opted to join Athletic Bilbao on a permanent deal.

The move was confirmed by Gomez on his Twitter page, and it ends speculation linking the winger with a move to Elland Road this season.

It had been previously reported by Goal, that Leeds were one of the frontrunners to strike a deal for Gomez who had been a regular for Alaves this season in La Liga.

But this latest development means that Marcelo Bielsa will have to look into alternative targets to fill the void left by Samuel Saiz who departed earlier this month in a move to Getafe.

The Leeds boss will need to act swiftly to secure new signings this month, as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their promotion bid this season.

But how big of a blow is this for Leeds?

We discuss....

Alfie Burns:

"He would’ve been a good addition at Elland Road, but in many ways it was wishful thinking.

"We’ve just seen Samu Saiz move to the La Liga and, in all honesty, why would Gomez eave the Spanish top-tier for a Championship promotion race.

"Time to move onto new targets."

Chris Gallagher:

"It's a big blow.

"Gomez is a classy player, and more importantly, he is someone Bielsa knows.

"Therefore, if he wanted him, he clearly thought he could add something to the team.

"Now Leeds need to look elsewhere as new additions are needed."

Jacob Potter:

"This is a frustrating blow for Leeds.

"It was no secret that the Whites were interested in striking a deal for the winger, who has fallen down the pecking order this season, and I'm surprised to see him move elsewhere.

"It only adds to the concern of Leeds supporters as to when they will make additions to the squad this month."
