The reshaping of the Sheffield Wednesday squad under Steve Bruce has taken place after the Owls released six senior players earlier this week.

George Boyd, Gary Hooper, Dave Jones, Almen Abdi, Daniel Pudil and Marco Matias were all told they wouldn't be offered a new deal by the club, with their current deals set to expire in the summer.

In some cases it wasn't really a surprise as Wednesday look to cut their hefty wage bill but it's still a significant move from the manager as he gears up for his first pre-season in charge.

So, has he made the right move?

Our writers take a look...

Ben Lang

"Definitely. Bruce was right when he said the squad needs a fresh look.

"He has proven this season what he is capable of, so they could definitely reach the play-offs if Bruce can implement his vision.

"A clear-out seems a logical way to start before they delve into the transfer market."

George Harbey

"I think it was to be expected really.

"Their turnaround under Steve Bruce has been remarkable since he walked through the doors at Hillsborough, but their squad still needs strengthening ahead of next season.

"I was surprised to see Marco Matias and Gary Hooper be let go by the club, but this shows that Bruce isn’t afraid to make bold decisions and statements of intent."

Gary Hutchinson

"Without a doubt.

“I’ve seen some of the names heading out and I’d be delighted as an Owl. Abdi, Boyd, Hooper all contributed nothing of late.

"Steve Bruce needs a fresh start there."

George Brooks

"I think so.

"Steve Bruce will be looking to considerably strengthen his squad in the transfer market this summer and the last thing he wants is an unbalanced squad with too many players.

"The good news for Sheffield Wednesday fans is that they can expect plenty of new additions in the summer, as Bruce looks to build a team who can challenge for promotion next season."
