Kemar Roofe has been talking about the heartache he and Leeds United faced last season as they crashed out of the play-offs at the hands of Derby County.

Leeds were in automatic promotion contention all season, but eventually lost out to Norwich City and Sheffield United. Roofe had struck 14 goals in an injury-hit season, with his form during the first-half of the season electric.

And, Roofe gave Leeds the perfect advantage in the play-offs with Derby, scoring his 15th goal of the season to put the Whites 1-0 up after the first-leg.

Injury ruled Roofe out of the dramatic second-leg, however, with Derby’s 4-2 win at Elland Road securing their passage to Wembley, ending Leeds’ season and Roofe’s career in West Yorkshire.

The highs and lows of Marcelo Bielsa’s first year at Leeds were well documented by Amazon’s series, which Roofe has touched on.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Roofe revealed: “I’ve watched the Amazon documentary and it brings back all the memories – the blood, sweat and tears that we put into it, then the bad ending.

“It was painful then, and it was painful to watch it again. I missed the second leg of the play-off semi-final against Derby due to injury, and it was horrible. There was nothing I could do to affect it.”

Roofe moved onto Anderlecht ahead of the 2019/20 season, leaving Leeds to battle for promotion once more without the striker.

Currently, Leeds sit top of the Championship table, with the season on hold and nine games left to play.

The Verdict

Roofe’s thoughts echo what a lot of Leeds fans will feel looking back on last season.

There was so much to enjoy, but the way it ended was horrible, with nobody seemingly able to do anything about Derby’s onslaught.

It was so tough to watch and watching it back is something that many haven’t managed.
