Barnsley have struggled on their return to the Championship, with Daniel Stendel's side in 23rd spot in the table with only one win all season, with there just three points between them and basement side Stoke City.

The step-up from the English third tier to the second is proving difficult for the Tykes, and Stendel will have to start to turn things round if he wants to avoid a relegation scrap this season.

With this in mind, what have you made of Stendel's start to life in the Championship?

We discuss........

Josh Cole

“After leading Barnsley to promotion last season, it is fair to say that Stendel has struggled to adapt to life in the second-tier of English football.

“Unquestionably one of the most competitive leagues in world football, the Championship can be extremely unforgiving at times which is something that the Tykes boss has experienced over the past two months.

“Whilst Barnsley were underwhelming in defeats to Birmingham City and Luton Town, they were rather unlucky not to pick up more points from their clashes with Charlton Athletic and Leeds United.

“With his Barnsley side currently 23rd in the second-tier standings, Stendel will be determined to get back to winning ways tonight at Oakwell against Derby County.”

Louie Chandler

"I think he has done the best he can with the tools at his disposal.

"We have seen in flashes that his approach can still work effectively in the second tier, but is perhaps lacking the personnel to do it consistently.

"Is that his fault? The board's? Who knows. But it is currently what is holding them back and it needs to change.

"When January rolls around, some more experienced players need to be brought in. Then I think we will see the best of them."

George Harbey

“It’s been a tough start to the season for him so far, but I actually think he deserves quite a bit of credit for the way he’s gone about things.

“After losing the likes of Kieffer Moore and Liam Lindsay in the summer, it was always going to be a tough ask to replace them.

“But rather than signing experienced players for the league, he went out and signed younger, hungry players who are unproven in the Championship.

“His side love to attack and they play really good football on the deck – he’s taken a few risks so far, and you have to commend him for that.”
