‘It was a bizarre appointment’ – Risky Nottingham Forest move, right call at the time? Opinion

Nottingham Forest supporters, cast your minds back to 27th June 2016, where the club appointed Philippe Montanier as their new manager.

His appointment was met with a mixed reaction from the club’s supporters, many of whom would have been concerned with his lack of experience in English football.

However, Montanier arrived with a wealth of experience under his belt as a manager across Europe, and had successful spells at the likes of Real Sociedad and Rennes.

There was no doubting that this appointment was a risky move by the Nottingham Forest board at the time and supporters would have been intrigued as to how he would fare in the Championship.

We go back in time with our ‘Time Machine’ here at FLW to have a look back at what the reaction would have been like at the time, when Forest appointed Montanier.

Was Montanier a good appointment for Nottingham Forest at the time though?

We discuss…

George Harbey:

“It was a bizarre appointment.

“After the ridiculous appointment of Paul Williams, Forest were crying out for an experienced manager who knows the division well.

“The Frenchman has managed some big teams in France, but it was a very risky move by Forest.”

Louie Chandler:

“This was an enormous risk.

“An impressive spell with Real Sociedad showed that he could well have the tools to do a job at Forest, but came with no experience in the English game.

“Although, under the Forest regime at the time, any manager would have been hard-pressed to do a good job.”

Jacob Potter:

“What a strange one this was!

“He arrived from Rennes after a successful spell in France, and I had high hopes for him, but there is always an element of risk when you don’t have any experience in English football, let alone the Championship.

“It was risky business.”
