Leeds United recorded their first win since the back-end of January when they overcame Bristol City 1-0 at Elland Road.

The game saw two promotion hopefuls go head-to-head at Elland Road with Lee Johnson’s side looking to steal a march on Leeds with a win that would have seen them draw level on points.

Leeds dominated the entirety of the match with Luke Ayling’s first-half strike enough to separate the two sides on the day, despite the glut of chances created throughout the game in the Whites’ attack.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men failed to extend their lead during the game and had to settle with a narrow 1-0, with nerves peaking late on when Nakhi Wells fired a decent chance over the bar, but it was the only time the Robins were able to really lay a glove on Leeds.

The win sparked mass relief and jubilation from the fans after a rocky couple of months, especially with how other results panned out elsewhere.

We take a look at the magnitude of Leeds’ win in this six point opinion…

First of all, how was the performance?

“While a narrow 1-0 scoreline would indicate that this was finely poised throughout the game on face value, the stats and balance of play in general paint a hugely different picture.

“Leeds had 20 shots to Bristol’s three, six on target to Bristol’s one, and managed 68.4% possession to Bristol’s 31.6%, showing just how dominant they were. The Robins didn’t manage a single corner to Leeds’ whopping 12.

“It was routine from start to finish for Leeds and bared a very strong resemblance to the victories in the early stages of the season, constricting the opponents into creating virtually nothing.”

Were there any standout performers?

“Luke Ayling scored the game’s only goal and was a constant influence at both ends of the pitch for Leeds, creating chances and breaking down Bristol attacks.

“The right-back was deservedly receiving plaudits for a top performance and looked back to his best on the right side of the defence.

“Kalvin Phillips was also in fine form in holding midfield as he provided the whole side with much more balance in the transition from defence to attack, seeing Leeds hold a much stronger shape.

“Since coming back into the side, Phillips has helped Leeds massively by getting more out of players who have reverted back to their natural positions, such as Stuart Dallas and Ben White in particular.”

Where does this win leave Leeds?

“A poor run of form since the 3-3 collapse against Cardiff City has seen the Whites surrender an 11-point lead over third place, coming down to just goal difference over Fulham.

“With Leeds overcoming Bristol on Saturday, they got back to winning ways and results elsewhere consolidated their place in the top two with West Brom.

“Fulham fell to a 3-0 defeat against Barnsley, while Brentford could only draw at Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest snatched a late draw at West Brom.

“With these results going hugely in Leeds’ favour, they now sit three points clear of the Cottagers with 13 games left to play.”

Can you name the nationality of these Leeds players?

How important could this win be for confidence?

“It was massively needed win for Marcelo Bielsa’s side to put to rest a terrible run in the league and should be enough to see them kick on from now.

“There was a marked improvement from the Whites against Brentford and Bristol, so four points against direct rivals should lift spirits immensely for the promotion run-in.

“Performances are the main thing for Bielsa when looking at each game, but the players will be hugely buoyant after getting a deserved win for their dominance all over the pitch.”

Does this put the bad run behind them?

"After a run of four defeats in the last six and just one victory, there hasn't been too much to shout about at Elland Road in recent weeks.

"However, there was a definite sense in the crowd that the Whites had turned a corner by grinding out a very strong performance and deserved three points.

"It's hard to say whether this completely puts their poor form to rest but with two showings in a row that caught the eye of the rest of the Championship, it seems like the good results and form will return for Bielsa and his squad."

Finally, what is the magnitude of this in the run-in?

“Leeds certainly have a much more favourable run-in in comparison to their rivals, with Leeds now only having one of the current top seven left to face in their last 13 games.

“Leeds face Fulham at Elland Road in just over a month as one of the only three teams in the top half that they have to play, while the Cottagers have to play all of the top seven, and every other in that pack having to play at least three of them.

“This favourable run-in plays a lot into Leeds’ hands and should see them kick on and get a good run together from now until May.

“With a bad run out of the way seemingly at the perfect time, Bielsa will be hoping that his side can start to push further away from Fulham and the rest again.”
