Sky Bet Championship promotion candidates West Bromwich Albion are reportedly plotting a surprising January move for former playmaker Giles Barnes.

The 30-year-old has been without a club since the start of the summer, after his deal with Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids expired.

The attacking midfielder is, of course, no stranger to the Hawthorns - the Jamaican international made twenty-three appearances for the Baggies during a one-year stay with the club, and is now reportedly training with Darren Moore's men ahead of a push for automatic promotion this season.

Here, we discuss whether Barnes would be a good signing for West Brom...

George Harbey

This is a shocking development - where has this come from?

Barnes has been completely forgotten about in recent years, and hasn't really set the world alight over in the MLS.

Surely there are better options out there?

Chris Gallagher

This seems like another pointless signing.

It's a big ask to get Barnes to make a big impact at this level now and it seems like Moore is panicking.

They don't need him at the moment but if they did lose some key players then they should be lining up better players than Barnes to come in.

Jacob Potter

This is a risk, but it could pay off.

Barnes isn't a proven goalscorer in English football but if he can find his feet quickly, then it will be a shrewd bit of business.

He wouldn't cost, but would he get regular game time? I'm not so sure.
