After a dismal start to the 2019/20 campaign, Huddersfield Town remain on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Jan Siewert less than a fortnight ago.

The German boss was relieved of his duties by the Yorkshire club after a defeat to Fulham two weeks ago, with the 37-year-old winning only one out of 19 games during his tenure of the Terriers.

Town currently occupy 23rd spot in the Sky Bet Championship table, and with Mark Hudson losing his two games in temporary charge, the need to appoint a permanent manager continues to grow.

Discussing Huddersfield's next step in their managerial search in today's six-pointer is FLW writer George Harbey...

What's the current situation at the John Smith's Stadium? How close are they to appointing a new manager?

"The club are in the process of going through applications from those who want to become the manager of Huddersfield Town.

"Chairman Phil Hodgkinson has told the Examiner Live that they have received applications from England as well as from abroad, and also from managers that are currently in employment.

"Town's head of football operations David Webb has held talks with those candidates from England, and is holding further interviews with those who have applied from abroad."

Who is in the frame?

"There a number of options out there who are believed to be in the running for the job, including caretaker boss Hudson.

"The Yorkshire Post claims that former Hull manager Nigel Adkins is in contention to become the new Terriers boss - he left the KCOM Stadium upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season, and guided the Tigers to a 13th placed finish last term.

"Ironically, he also worked with Webb during his time at Southampton, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Who isn't in the frame?

"Sky Sports claimed that former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka wanted to speak with Huddersfield regarding the vacant role, but Hodgkinson has ruled out the potential appointment of the Spaniard.

"Both Karanka and Chris Hughton, who has also been ruled out by Hodgkinson, were popular choices amongst the Terriers faithful given their previous experiences of winning promotion to the Premier League."

Who would be the best appointment for Town?

"Of course, managers like Karanka and Hughton, who have experience of getting out of this division on their CV, would have been perfect appointments for Town, but I think fans need to be realistic.

"Huddersfield have a healthy pay structure in place, and managers of their calibre would cost a lot of money to go out and get.

"I really think that Adkins would be a good appointment for Huddersfield - he worked under tough conditions at Hull City and did a fairly decent job at the helm. He would steady the ship and get things back on track, in my opinion."

What issues does the next manager need to resolve?

"There a number of issues that their next manager would have to fix, and a new boss with fresh ideas could be beneficial for them.

"I think that straight away, they've got to stop them from conceding silly goals, having conceded nearly two goals a game in the Championship this season.

"He also needs to settle on a system that gets the best out of the players - does he stick with the 4-2-3-1 system, or change things up a bit?

"I feel that they don't create enough chances either - even though he's scored three goals this season already, Karlan Grant needs much better service up top."

Finally, just how important is this decision?

"Huddersfield's season is far from over yet, and the right appointment could really galvanise an upturn in form and a climb up the table.

"The wrong appointment, though, could fail to change results and destroy any chance they have left of finishing in the play-off spots.

"It really is make or break for Hodgkinson, Webb and the club in general."
