New Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill faces a decision in January with West Ham hoping to sign his goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan with an option to buy him, according to reliable insider EXWHUEmployee.

Speaking on The West Ham Way podcast on Phoenix FM, EXWHUEmployee told listeners that West Ham want to sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window and Butland is an option.

West Ham will explore the option of signing the 26-year-old on an initial loan, which is a move the Potters might be tempted by if a significant loan fee was forthcoming and the promise of a major transfer fee in the summer.

So would Butland be a good signing for the Hammers?

“This could go either way to be honest, there’s no doubt that Butland has the quality to play in the Premier League but it’s a question of his own confidence lately.

“Butland was brilliant for Stoke in the top flight but their demise in recent years has led to his form nosediving, which isn’t a surprise given he has little cover from his defence.

“The appointment of Michael O’Neill might help turnaround the Potters’ fortunes and consequently Butland’s so we can see the ‘keeper that he is capable of being.

“I doubt Butland would start for West Ham, given Lukasz Fabianksi’s form, but getting a cut-price deal for a player who might simply just need a confidence boost could be a terrific deal for the Hammers.”

Ned Holmes

"Yes, I think this could be a smart move from the Premier League side.

"West Ham have really struggled in the absence of Fabianski and you feel it would be a good idea to bring in some reinforcements.

"Butland hasn't really looked himself since Stoke were relegated from the Championship but you feel a fresh start back in the top flight could be exactly what he needs.

"The Hammers are thought to be interested in a loan deal, which makes a lot of sense and is low risk–but could also pave the way for a permanent deal in the future."

“Whilst there is no doubting that Butland possesses a great deal of talent, it may turn out to be a mistake by West Ham if they do indeed opt to swoop for him in January.

“Despite being one of Stoke’s stand-out performers last season, the shot-stopper has looked devoid of any confidence during the current campaign.

“At fault for a number of the goals that the Potters have conceded in the Championship, Butland may not be ready to make a return to the Premier League due to his lack of form in between the sticks.

“Therefore, West Ham may find it beneficial to look elsewhere in the upcoming transfer window if they are indeed looking to bolster their goalkeeping options at the London Stadium.”
