Leeds United will need to fight it out with Celtic for the signature of Brentford captain Romaine Sawyers, according to The Daily Record, as Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa looks to strengthen his squad following the departure of Pontus Jansson who ironically headed the other way, signing at Griffin Park.
Sawyers, 27, was a regular for Thomas Frank last season, making 43 appearances in all competitions as the Bees went on to finish in 11th spot in the Championship, 10 points shy of the play-off places.
So would Sawyers be a good signing for Leeds United?
“Romaine Sawyers would be a great signing for Leeds.
“He’s been a standout player for Brentford in recent years and is always consistent and will provide a lot more depth in midfield.
“Personally I think Leeds are short of one central midfielder, and in Sawyers they have one who is very complete and well rounded, and that should suit Leeds’ system.
“He has good creative qualities and would be an ideal man to sit alongside Klich, rather than having to use a wide player or striker in there, such as Roofe, Roberts or Hernandez.”
“It would be a good signing for a number of reasons.
“I must stress that if this is a replacement for Kalvin Phillips then it isn’t as good a deal but if it’s to add to their midfielder options then I am all for it.
“Sawyers might have been accused of looking lazy last season at times but it’s just his languid style. He’s actually very mobile and industrious about the pitch and would be able to cope easily with Bielsa’s style of play.
“Furthermore, Brentford only want £2.5m for him which, however you look at it, is a price worth paying even if it doesn’t work out.
“I think it would be a good deal for the Whites, though, so I’d be all for it.”
“I think this would be a smart signing from Leeds, it makes sense.
“Central-midfield was an area where the Whites were seriously lacking quality last season, aside from Phillips, and Sawyers could definitely add that.
“He was far from prolific in front of goal, with seven assists the total of his direct goal contributions, but in terms of linking defence and attack there are few better than him in the Championship.
“Mateusz Klick was the only other central midfielder to impress frequently for Leeds so adding more competition in the area has got to be the right thing to do.”
