The 2016/17 Championship campaign culminated in disappointment once again for Sheffield Wednesday, as they failed to clinch promotion to the Premier League for the second season running.

The Owls were defeated by Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town in the playoff semi-finals on penalties, who then, of course, went on to defeat Reading in the Play-Off final to secure a place in the Premier League for the first time in their history.

One thing that is a certainty next season is that Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal has been backed by the club to lead the Owls to promotion at the third time of asking. Still, will this be the final chance for him to do so?

A squad of Wednesday's quality should really be competing for the title, so next season the deadwood needs to be removed in order to make way for fresh, new talent.

With that being said, here, FLW writer George Harbey identifies TWO players who it makes sense for Wednesday to get rid of in the preparation for the 2017/18 campaign...

Lewis McGugan

Having failed to make a single appearance for the Owls last term, it definitely makes sense for Wednesday to get rid of Lewis McGugan.

The midfielder has made a total of 34 appearances for the Owls, and boasts vast Championship experience that would be a key asset for any second-tier outfit.

But with Wednesday looking to challenge for promotion to the Premier League once again, the 28-year-old needs to leave for the sake of his AND Wednesday's future.

Likely to be a high-earner too, freeing up wages is a must in order for the Owls to bring in fresh, new talent that will add strength in depth to the midfield.

Atdhe Nuhiu

Having failed to score a single goal throughout the duration of last season, making just 23 appearances too, the 27-year old's time at Hillsborough looks to be almost up.

The likes of Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher, Gary Hopper and Jordan Rhodes have all pushed Nuhiu further down the pecking order, making his game time even more limited as seasons go by.

Wednesday definitely need to cash in on the unwanted forward in the summer, as he is likely to be a hefty wage package considering his lengthy stint at the club.

So...what do you think Wednesday fans? Should these two players leave in the summer? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
