The 2016/17 Championship campaign culminated in disappointment once again for Sheffield Wednesday, as they failed to clinch promotion to the Premier League for the second season running.
The Owls were defeated by Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town in the playoff semi-finals on penalties, who then, of course, went on to defeat Reading in the Play-Off final to secure a place in the Premier League for the first time in their history.
One thing that is a certainty next season is that Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal has been backed by the club to lead the Owls to promotion at the third time of asking. Still, will this be the final chance for him to do so?
A squad of Wednesday’s quality should really be competing for the title, so next season the deadwood needs to be removed in order to make way for fresh, new talent.
