Having seen their transfer ban reduced, Chelsea are free to take part in the January transfer window next month, with manager Frank Lampard likely to bring in reinforcements to bolster a youthful squad and according to the Daily Mail that could include a move to sign Brentford star Said Benrahma.
The 24-year-old is valued at £20million and has become one of the standout players in the Championship, scoring three goals and registering three assists in 12 starts this season.
So would Benrahma be a good signing for Chelsea and is he good enough for the Premier League?
“This could be an interesting signing for Chelsea but for me it looks a gamble.
“Benrahma does look destined for a Premier League move but I’d question if he is good enough for Chelsea.
“Frank Lampard has players like Callum Hudson-Odoi, Willian, Pedro and Christian Pulisic at his disposal currently and I don’t think Benrahma is up to their level.
“If the club are willing to bring him in and be patient with him it could be a smart move but it looks a risk.”
“This is a mixed one for me and it’s likely to be a signing that divides Chelsea fans right down the middle.
“Benrahma is quite easily one of the most talented players in the Championship – his footwork is incredible and the way he can take on defenders is superb.
“He has also contributed to plenty of goals over the past couple of years, and his end-product could be fantastic for the likes of Tammy Abraham.
“But would he get in the team ahead of Willian and Christian Pulisic? I think that he would be a backup option for Frank Lampard’s side, but he could fit into that 4-2-3-1 system really well and could come at a bargain price.”
Would Said Benrahma be a good signing for Chelsea?
“Although there is no doubting Benrahma’s qualities, it could be argued that a move to Chelsea at this stage of his career could turn out to be a mistake.
“Currently thriving under the guidance of Thomas Frank at Brentford, the winger has already provided seven direct goal contributions in the Championship this season.
“Unquestionably talented, there is no reason why Benrahma cannot make the step up in level to the Premier League in the not too distant future if he continues to shine for the Bees.
“However, when you consider that Chelsea have the likes of Willian, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Pulisic at their disposal, there is no guarantee that the Algerian international will be able to play regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.”
