Football League World's Sunderland fan pundit Charlie Hodgson has suggested that Phil Parkinson should be given more time but revealed that he has little confidence in the Black Cats boss.

Parkinson suffered his fourth defeat in eight games against League Two strugglers Scunthorpe last night.

The 3-0 defeat also means Sunderland have failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of the EFL Trophy.

There were reportedly chants of "you're not fit to wear the shirt" during yesterday's game and Black Cats fans' frustrations appear to not just have been directed at the players, as many have suggested on Twitter that Parkinson should go, less than a month after he took charge.

Hodgson indicated that he disagrees with that sentiment but revealed that he has little confidence in the English coach.

He explained: "I don’t think he needs to go at the moment but that’s purely on the basis that we can’t sack a manager after eight games. It doesn't look good for the club as a whole and it isn’t fair to sack a manager that hasn't even had a chance to form a squad of his own.

"However, I wouldn't be too bothered if they do sack him now as I can't see us scoring a goal at the moment never mind winning a game, which for a team that were aiming for 100 points at the start of the season is worrying to see."

Sunderland's are set to face Gillingham FA Cup First Round replay on Tuesday, however, there have been suggestions that it may be postponed due to the international break and injury issues.
