‘It is understood’ – Reliable journalist shares Sheffield Wednesday contract update as relegation threat looms

Some Sheffield Wednesday’s players could be subjected to a substantial wage cut if they suffer relegation, according to the Sheffield Star.

The Owls are sitting in a precarious position in the Championship with the club facing the prospect of being relegated this weekend if results don’t go their way.

As it stands Darren Moore’s side are four points from safety with just two matches remaining, meaning that the club are likely to need victories against both Nottingham Forest and Derby County if they’re to have any chance of staying up.

Wednesday have around 19 first team players out of contract this summer, but with some holding contracts beyond the end of the season it seems that even they could be hit hard by the financial impact of suffering relegation.

Writing for the Sheffield Star, Miller said: “It is understood that some – if not all – of the players set to stay on at Hillsborough are facing a drop in wages should they be unable to beat the drop, with sources suggesting some salaries could decrease by over a third.

“These clauses are designed to guard the club against losses incurred by a drop in divisional status, with some football finance experts putting the approximate figure for loss of TV rights at around £8m.

“It is not known exactly which players have which clauses in their deals.”

Quiz: Did each of these 18 ex-Sheffield Wednesday players ever score a goal at Hillsborough?

The verdict

Unfortunately for Sheffield Wednesday this is the reality of facing relegation.

The Owls look likely to be playing in League One next term and for their players it means that they’re likely to take a financial hit.

I guess it’s at that point where the club will learn who is genuinely keen to help the club if they do go down.
