Darron Gibson’s foul mouthed outburst has rocked Sunderland, with the headlines recently dominated by the Irish international’s admission that his team just, er, aren’t very good?

The midfielder was reported to have insulted the club and his teammates in a bar to fans following their 5-0 preseason defeat at home to Celtic, and the Press have jumped on the controversy which has thrown the Black Cats into disrepute.

However, could it really be considered that everyone is overreacting?

Yes, Gibson should not have vented his frustrations to fans in a bar after presumably enjoying a drink or two.

To be fair to the player, his admission is true.

His team had just lost 5-0 at home to a Scottish side many consider to be no better than the Championship, and the player’s frustrations simply got the better of him.

We have all been there, and Gibson’s was unlucky to have had his rant caught on camera.

Despite the controversy, this could actually work in Sunderland’s favour.

Gibson will have apologised to his teammates, but they are surely not naive enough to believe that their performance against the Bhoys was not below the standards required to compete at this level.

The words of the 29-year-old could actually prove to inspire and motivate his colleagues, who will surely be out to prove the player and fans wrong, as they look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

A man of Gibson’s experience should know better than, but it is impossible for footballer’s to act perfectly all the time, and in this day and age, some of their misdemeanours are sure to be caught on camera.

Sunderland have certainly faced bigger scandals than this in recent seasons, and it is time to move on and look forward to what is set to be an exciting year of Championship football.

Sunderland fans, surely many of you agree with Gibson's words?!
