Noel Whelan insists that there can now be no arguments if Leeds United win promotion to the Premier League, with the Championship set to return in less than three weeks.

The EFL campaign has been put on hold for over two months now, with the country's safety a much higher priority than anything else right now.

Before the lengthy break, Leeds were well on course to secure a long-awaited return to the Premier League via the automatic promotion route, after winning five games on the bounce.

Leeds sit top of the Sky Bet Championship table and seven points clear of the play-offs with nine games left to play, with the Championship set to restart on the 20th of June.

Games will be played without supporters, but most importantly, Marcelo Bielsa's side have an opportunity to finish off what they started and get themselves over the line.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds player Noel Whelan says that it is "fantastic" news for Leeds, who will be dreaming of a memorable return to England's top-flight this term.

He said: “It is fantastic. The testing has been done the right way and there has been great results that have come back.

“It is good for the Premier League and Championship that we will see a conclusion because there has been a lot talked about relegation being unfair but there will be nothing to argue about now.

“Both leagues are going to be completed.”

The Verdict

Leeds will be delighted that they can now attempt to win promotion properly without going down the points-per-game model.

They have put so much work into making this season a promotion-winning one after last season's heartbreak, and it would have been somewhat underwhelming if the season had ended prematurely.

Playing without fans will be strange, but Bielsa's men have got to adapt to that and hit the ground running.
