The fall-out at the Hawthorns continues following West Brom's exit from the Championship play-offs at the semi-final stage, following a penalty shoot-out defeat to Aston Villa.

The defeat has meant that the Baggies have opted out of signing Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle permanently following his season on loan, with technical director Luke Dowling confirming the situation.

Dowling confirmed "Dwight's contract is a Premier League contract," adding "We will pay Premier League contracts but only when we are back in the Premier League."

Gayle, 28, ended up with 24 goals for the Baggies, just outscoring strike partner Jay Rodriguez, who got 22, with only three Championship strikers scoring more goals.

So how disappointed should Baggies fans be, that Gayle will not be returning next season?

We discuss........

Gary Hutchinson

“It doesn’t surprise me.

“They haven’t got a manager yet, how can they be making big signings?

“I can see him back in the Championship though, his qualities will be valuable to an aspiring top six side.

“He’d fit Leeds perfectly.”

Alfie Burns

“There’s no denying that Gayle is a great striker at this level, but this seems the sensible move.

“It’s pointless throwing loads of money at Gayle, particularly when you consider West Brom’s financial situation.

“The last thing they want is ending up in a situation like Aston Villa were in a couple of seasons ago.

“They’d be better off looking elsewhere.”

Toby Wilding

"This is a bit surprising for me.

"Given Gayle has top scored for The Baggies this season I would have expected them to try a bit harder to bring him back.

"At the very least I would have thought a swap deal with Salomon Rondon - who Newcastle seem to want - would have been suggested."

Louie Chandler

"It is a shame, but it's sensible.

"Gayle has obviously been excellent this season and will have been high on the club's shopping list.

"But considering the complications with Newcastle and Rondon it may not have been worth the hassle and money in the summer."
