Barnsley made the somewhat surprising announcement that they had parted company with Daniel Stendel, after a poor start to this year's campaign.

Stendel guided the Tykes to promotion back into the Championship last season, but only won one of his opening eleven league games which led to his exit.

Football League World's Barnsley fan pundit Dan Sykes issued his thoughts on Stendel's departure, and claims that something has happened behind the scenes at Oakwell as a potential reason as to why they parted ways with the 45-year-old.

"The only way Stendel leaving could have been for the best is if either something massive has gone on behind the scenes that we have not yet been privy to, or else he's been speaking to other clubs and his position has been made untenable.

"If as we fans are led to believe, the issue is regarding Daniel repeatedly stating to the board he needed experience adding to his squad, and the board have told him he has to work with what he has until January, then it is possible that he has walked away before his reputation is tarnished due to circumstances beyond his control."

Sykes went on to admit that a lack of alternative tactics from Stendel could have cost him his job at Oakwell, with Barnsley's relatively young squad struggling to adjust to life in the second tier.

"If Stendel is to shoulder part of the blame for his leaving, I would suggest that it is because of his stubborn tactical decision to persist with plan A, even when we are struggling against teams.

"He has had 11 games to realise we don't have the players to play that way at Championship level and he has stuck rigidly to his vision and it has cost us."

The regular punter felt that none of the blame for Stendel's departure can be with the players, and revealed who he would like to see come in as his replacement in the near future.

"I don't think any blame can be apportioned to the players. I haven't seen any that I believe haven't given everything on the pitch. I just think that some of them have not yet adjusted or improved enough for the Championship.

"Personally I'd like to see an experienced coach take over until the end of the season the likes of Ian Holloway or Nigel Adkins.

"But I would expect it to be a left field appointment from Europe or an internal appointment or either Adam Murray or Bobby Hassell."
