Nottingham Forest continue to challenge for the play-off places in the Championship this season, with Sabri Lamouchi's side unbeaten in four outings and now only nine points off West Brom, who currently top the table with over half of the season complete.

Lamouchi will have some decisions to make regarding personnel during the winter transfer window as he looks to maintain his side's promotion challenge, and one player he could be considering is midfielder João Carvalho, who has struggled for consistency during this campaign.

So should Forest keep or sell Carvalho in this transfer window?

We discuss.........

George Brooks

"I personally think Nottingham Forest should keep Joao Carvalho. He's a very talented player and he showed last season that he's more than capable of making an impact in the Championship.

"The Portuguese has shown glimpses of his best quality this season, he just needs to be more consistent. Sabri Lamouchi needs to find a way to get the best out of him, because on his day, he's one of the most exciting and creative attacking players in the division.

"Sometimes I feel that people expect more from Carvalho than they do from other Forest players because of his club-record price tag. Sometimes it's easy to forget that this is only his second season in English football and that he's still only 22.

"I don't think Forest should give up on him just yet. Give him time and he could become a key player for the Reds, because he's certainly got the ability to."

"It entirely depends on the fee.

"If they can get anywhere near what they paid for him, or even anything around £8m or above, then they should snap the buying clubs hands off.

"Most Forest fans love the player and you can understand why to a degree because he is clearly talented but the harsh reality is that he has been a hugely underwhelming signing. For £13m he should be more consistent and needs to be a regular by now.

"Simply put, if they could put a big fee towards someone like Dwight Gayle, are the Reds more likely to win promotion with Gayle or Carvalho in the squad? It's a no-brainer and if he can fund the arrival of a quality forward he needs to be sold."

Kris Smith

“I think they should keep him, given how well he has performed in patches over the last 18 months, so there is a genuine top drawer player there for Forest.

“At the moment, he isn’t capturing the form of last season but that comes as a symptom of playing a style under Sabri Lamouchi that is contrasting to what he became accustomed to last season under two different managers.

“With 17 appearances, one goal and one assist, it would appear on face value that Carvalho has done nowhere near enough to warrant his price tag, but the glimpses he has shown in a Forest shirt should be enough to earn him some patience from the club.

“The creative flair that he has is hard to come by, especially at Championship level, so there is a huge risk in selling a player like Carvalho, even more so in January when replacements are scarce.”
