Sheffield United continue to move into a new era under the management of Slavisa Jokanovic at Bramall Lane.

It's been an inconsistent start to the 2021/22 campaign for the Blades, who sit 14th in the table as we speak.

Maybe it was to be expected as the club find their feet again after the ride Chris Wilder took them on from League One to ninth in the Premier League, before departing prior to relegation back into the Championship.

One key change that Jokanovic has made is ditching the 3-5-2 system that Wilder mastered to get Sheffield United making an impact in the top-flight. Instead, the Serbian is going with his trusted 4-2-3-1 that was used during his time with Watford and Fulham.

That's something that has caused debate amongst the Sheffield United fans given their lack of wingers and plethora of strikers suited to a two-man axis.

Over on FLW TV, Alfie Burns and Ben Wignall have been discussing the Blades on 'The Debate', questioning whether or not Jokanovic could deliver promotion back into the Premier League.

Conversation drifted onto Jokanovic's system of choice with Ben not surprised to see 4-2-3-1 favoured.

He said: “It doesn’t surprise me that he’s gone with the formation. It’s the system he’s used at Watford and Fulham and he’s had success with it.

“Some managers will just stick with that one system. Wilder did it with the wing-backs and it worked.

“He (Jokanovic) did try the 3-5-2 in a couple of games against Huddersfield and Luton. It didn’t quite work out in either game and he’s clearly more comfortable now using the system he is."

Despite square pegs in round holes in terms of the attacking positions, Ben feels that the quality of striker Sheffield United have, and given their different characteristics, Jokanovic can still have success with this system.

However, as January starts to loom, it's clear where the priority needs to be.

Ben continued: “They’ve got a lot of strikers to fit in and shoehorn into that formation but they’ve all got different characteristics. You’ve got hold up players like McBurnie and McGoldrick, then you’ve got pacy players like Mousset and Brewster.

“He’s got a few wins now since the first international break. It seems to be working this system, the lack of wingers is a concern but until January they’ve got the quality of player to fill in there.”
